SALEM, Va. – The Radford cross country team braved the wet conditions on Saturday morning, putting together some decent times given the circumstances at the ECE Fast Times Invite.
The team raced mostly against themselves and against the clock, as their only competitors came against less than a handful of runners from Virginia Tech.
In the men's race, Azrael Cabusao led the Highlanders to a second-place finish and was the top Radford finisher for the second time this season. The New Zealander clocked a time of 25:58.9 in the 8K, just 10 seconds behind Carter Johnson of Virginia Tech. Grayson Norris followed in third to snag a podium spot, as the freshman missed what would have been a new college PR by just under three seconds (26:13.3).
Following Norris was fellow freshman Tristan Fancher, who completed his first collegiate 8K with a time of 26:24.6. Rounding out the top five in the men's race was Logan Wheelock, who clocked in at 26:26.1. Joel Williams (26:48.2) and Owen Sexton (26:55.0) each came in under the 27-minute mark. Rounding out the Radford men's finishers were Logan Hamilton (27:08.6), Spencer Thacker (27:15.4), Jack Jeffries (27:18.5), and Tyler Kiser (28:56.9).
In the women's race, Kayla Fields finished fifth to lead the Highlanders with a time of 18:57.6 in the 5K. Allison Nelson took sixth overall and second among her team with a 19:19.4, and Teagan Gillhooly led the Radford freshman with a time of 19:25.3. Rounding out the top five finishers on the women's team were Katelyn Campbell (19:34.4) and Kaylie Dziedzina (19:41.3).
One of the highlights came from Emma Shirey, whose 5K time of 19:45.5 was a personal best.
The Highlanders are back in action on Saturday, October 17, when they run their first of three meets in Spartanburg, S.C., at the Upstate Invite. The action begins at 9 a.m. at the Milliken Research Center.
