Khalid Abdullahi of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's cross country team has been named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The senior from Raleigh, North Carolina, paced the Spartans at the Upstate Invitational on Oct. 17, as he finished seventh in the men's 8K among a competitive field of 344 runners. Abdullahi's time of 24:05.1 was a new personal record, shattering his previous best 8K mark of 25:00.9 from the Pirate Invitational back on Oct. 4, 2024.
His finish at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina, was the second time this season that Abdullahi has led the Spartan finishers on the men's side after the adidas XC Challenge, where he placed 22nd. Racing against a field featuring seven other SoCon squads, Abdullahi was the second-highest male finisher among the Conference in Spartanburg.
The award is the first of his UNCG career and the first this season for the Spartans.
UNCG's men placed fifth on the day among 37 squads, finishing with 150 points and just behind Charleston Southern, Duke, Furman, and Davidson. Running earlier in the morning, the Spartan women placed eighth among 36 teams in the 5K.
The next races for the Spartans will be the Tryon SoCon Cross Country Championships, hosted in Mill Spring, North Carolina, at the Tryon Equestrian Center on Saturday, Oct. 31. Tickets are now on sale.
