A 5K in downtown Statesville later this month will benefit a charity established to help parents who’ve lost a child.
The Hyatt’s 5th Annual Run with the Angels will take place March 25 in downtown Statesville.
The race raises money for Hyatt’s Angels, a charity formed in 2012 by Doug and Samantha Fleegle in memory of their infant son, Hyatt Walker Fleegle. This charity, Doug Fleegle said, is to assist grieving parents by covering a child’s burial expenses and providing emotional support.
The most recent contribution, Fleegle said, was to the family of Zaliyah Rice of Statesville. Zaliyah was 6-months-old when she died on Jan. 28. She was diagnosed with Zellweger Syndrome and passed away under the care of Hospice. The payment for cremation services for the infant was made by Hyatt’s Angels.
Since the founding of Hyatt’s Angels, the funeral expenses of 24 children have been funded. In addition, Fleegle said, Hyatt’s Angels made sizeable contributions to the child care center his son would have attended as well as to the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep photography service that works through hospitals with parents who lose an infant at birth.
The Fleegles established Hyatt’s Run With the Angels 5K Run/Fun Walk fundraisers in Orlando, Windber, Pennsylvania, Libertyville, Illinois and Tupelo, Mississippi.
The run in Statesville will start at Mitchell College and follow a 3.1 mile course through the historic downtown area. The 5K and one mile fun run/walk begin at 9 a.m.
Onsite registration starts at 8 a.m.
Registration is $25 before race day and $30 on race day.
